Those of us at Darr-Schackow Insurance are excited about celebrating our country's Independence Day on Friday. We believe that the Declaration of Independence was correct when it said that “all men are created equal,” but do you want to know something that wasn’t created equal? Car insurance policies.

Car insurance is required in Florida, but there are so many different carriers with different coverage and pricing that navigating it yourself can be a challenge. Most people just use the carrier their family uses, but you’ll never know if you have the right coverage for the right price if you don’t consult with DSI.

  1. Property Damage Liability

    • If you are found at fault in a car accident, property damage liability insurance covers property damage repairs up to the predetermined coverage limit. Florida law requires a minimum of $10,000 liability insurance, but purchasing the most that you can afford is recommended.

  2. Bodily Injury Liability

    • Similar to property damage liability, bodily injury liability covers medical bills if you are at-fault in an accident.

  3. Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

    • PIP specifically covers your and your passenger’s medical bills up to your policy limit, regardless of who is at fault. Florida law requires a minimum of $10,000 PIP insurance. People riding in your vehicle who have their own PIP insurance will also be covered by their own policies.

  4. Collision

    • Collision insurance specifically covers vehicle repairs. Totaling your car is when the repairs would cost more than the value of your car. If your car is totaled, collision insurance will pay you for the value of your car - not necessarily for a brand new car. Depending on the value of your car, you may choose to not purchase collision insurance if you can afford to replace your car yourself.

  5. Comprehensive

    • Comprehensive insurance covers incidents unrelated to a car accident. This includes situations such as your car being stolen, vandalism, hitting an animal or weather catastrophes. Comprehensive insurance usually will pay for a rental vehicle while yours is being repaired or replaced.

  6. Uninsured Motorist Protection

    • Florida law requires all licensed vehicles to be insured, but unfortunately, not everyone follows the law. If someone without insurance is at fault in an accident, your uninsured motorist protection will cover your expenses. It will also help cover expenses if the at-fault driver is underinsured, meaning their coverage doesn’t completely pay for the extent of the damage. While Florida law does not require this coverage, it’s usually relatively inexpensive to add to your policy.

Car insurance is required by Florida law and driving without it is extremely dangerous for your wallet. We believe that each person has the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Without insurance, you could be one serious car wreck away from bankruptcy. If you’re not sure exactly what your car insurance plan covers, contact us. An agent at Darr-Schackow Insurance will evaluate your current policy for free!
