Most claims involving lightning are not fire-related but instead concern damages caused by an electrical surge. Electrical surges caused by lightning can inflict damage upon appliances, electronics, computers, phone systems and electrical fixtures, and can also cause other electrical infrastructure problems. The resulting damage is often even more extensive than a homeowner initially realizes.

It’s important to be aware that many insurance policies will not pay for damage that results from off premises power surges. There is a difference between a lightning strike and a power surge. Most insurance companies will want you to get a lightning affidavit signed by your repair person so you are all in agreement.

The main challenge in assessing damage from electrical loss is to determine the full scope of the damage. Which electrical items are damaged? Did the lightning power surge damage the item? If so, what is the extent of the damage? Sometimes it will be necessary to bring in experts to make a determination on these factors.

One of the main pieces of advice we at Darr Schackow can give you is to NOT THROW AWAY the damaged item! The adjusters have ways of testing those items to determine if the damage was from a power surge that only lightning can create and they will need the item in order to do this.

We hope that you never have to deal with a lighting claim. But if you do, please contact our office immediately to have an expert guide you through the process of correctly filing your claim. (888) 337-9322
