Across the United States, almost 600,000 vehicles were stolen last year, with the Honda Accord being the most frequently stolen car. Exactly 53,995 various models were stolen across the nation, and the 2000 model Honda Civic was the most frequently stolen car in the state of Florida. While these numbers will hopefully decrease as the economy improves and alarm systems get better, car owners still need to be aware of the risks associated with car theft. Top most common cars stolen last year:

  1. 2000 Honda Civic

  2. 1996 Honda Accord

  3. 2000 Dodge Caravan

  4. 2010 Toyota Camry

  5. 1997 Nissan Altima

  6. 2006 Ford F-150

  7. 2005 Dodge Ram

  8. 1996 Nissan Maxima

  9. 2010 Toyota Corolla

  10. 2006 Ford F-350

Experts at the Florida Insurance Council say that cars manufactured before 2005 are more likely to be stolen because these older models lack the sophisticated alarm systems found in newer models. Computer-coded keys, perimeter alarms and trackable GPS systems are likely to deter thieves from stealing your wheels. Older model Hondas are the most commonly stolen car because of their popularity and the versatile ability of some of their products. The Florida Insurance Council said that parts from these cars can be used on many different models which makes them more of a target, as well.

If you own one of the vehicles listed above(or any vehicle, really!) it is recommended that you consider taking advantage of advanced lock systems or invest in an auto recovery tool. You should always keep track of your keys and do your best to park in well-lit areas. Always lock your car after leaving, don’t leave valuables in your car and never leave the vehicle running while you run in somewhere.

Darr Schackow Insurance provides vehicle insurance policies that cover stolen vehicles. Contact us today for more information on what your current policy covers.
