“Should I add my live in boyfriend to my auto insurance?”

The simple answer:  Yes and No.

I took this question from a long time great client of ours yesterday.  It started off something like this, “My boyfriend, who lives with me, is paying a lot more than I am for his car insurance. Can I just add him to my policy?” Me: “yes, we need to add him as a driver in your household, BUT, we should NOT add his car to your policy.”

Auto insurance follows the car.  Therefore, the policy needs to insure the owner of THAT car.  If we add his car to her policy, we could have a gap in coverage.  The insurance company will defend the named insured which in this case is DIFFERENT than the owner of the car.  Another reason you don’t want to add his car to her policy is what if he gets in an accident, or two, or three??  Your auto policy will increase in premium because his car is on YOUR policy.  I am sure that this will NEVER happen, but, what if you break up?  It could be messy...

You SHOULD add him as a driver on your policy.  Auto insurance is a contract between you and the insurance company.  There is wording in the policy that requires you to add ALL members of your household as drivers.  You can choose to exclude them if you would like, but, they still need to be added as drivers. YOU should add yourself to your boyfriends policy as a driver also.  EVEN IF YOU NEVER DRIVE HIS CAR! Again, you can exclude yourself as a driver, but, you probably shouldn’t do that. What happens in an emergency and you need to drive his car for some reason?  You could be without coverage.

In summary, add yourselves as drivers on each others policies but DON’T combine the two cars onto one policy unless you get married.  When you are married, things change, in more ways than one!
